Birmingham City are being urged to look elsewhere for a goalkeeper this summer as fan pundit Jason Moore has expressed strong reservations about re-signing James Beadle on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion. The Blues finished 10th in the Championship last season with 64 points (17W-13D-16L), their highest finish since 2015/16, and are aiming to push for promotion next term.

Why fans are divided on Beadle's potential return

Beadle spent the 2025/26 season on loan at St Andrew's, making 38 appearances as Birmingham secured their return to the Championship. However, Moore argues the 21-year-old isn't ready to be their first-choice keeper in a promotion push. "I don't think he's quite good enough," Moore said. "For a side that have quite openly said, 'this is where we're going and this is how we'll get there', I just don't think you can have any passengers in your side."

What Birmingham need in a goalkeeper

The fan pundit believes Birmingham need a more commanding presence between the sticks. "Does he instill confidence into the fans? Probably not. Does he put confidence into his back four? Probably not," Moore added. While acknowledging Beadle's potential, Moore feels the Blues need someone more reliable for their push towards the top six, with just 31 points separating them from leaders Coventry last season.

The search for a better option

Birmingham have been linked with several other goalkeepers this summer, and Moore hopes they pursue those options instead. "I think there are other 'keepers out there who we could get and not have to worry," he said. "It would also be another loan, so not financially costing the club. But I just think there are better options out there." With Bolton Wanderers also reportedly interested in Beadle, Birmingham may need to act quickly if they decide to look elsewhere.
