Scott Wright is back in Birmingham City’s 25-man Championship squad after a four-month absence from senior football. The winger’s reinstatement follows the departure of Kanya Fujimoto, who has joined J1 League side Tokyo Verdy on loan, creating a vacancy in the club's official squad list.

Wright had been omitted from the squad list submitted to the EFL at the end of the summer transfer window. The club had hoped to secure a loan move for the player, but the closure of windows across Europe left him without a route to first-team action. He has not made a Championship appearance since January, with his only outing this season coming as a substitute in the Carabao Cup win against Swansea City.

Manager Chris Davies acknowledged the situation earlier this season. "He is a fantastic guy who gives his all and is still with us but not part of the 25-man squad," Davies said. Wright’s initial omission was influenced by an Achilles injury and the club's strategy to find him regular game time elsewhere, having spent last season on loan at Dundee.

The EFL granted special dispensation for Wright’s inclusion following Fujimoto's exit. The 29-year-old former Rangers man, who joined Birmingham in August 2024 when the club was in League One, now returns to a competitive attacking group. He faces competition from the likes of Carlos Vicente and Patrick Roberts on the right, and Liam Millar and Demarai Gray on the left.

Birmingham City currently sit 10th in the Championship standings with 11 points from eight games. Their recent form reads one win, three draws and one defeat from the last five outings. According to the club's data, the team has scored 10 goals and conceded 12, averaging 75 goal minutes per match. The squad reshuffle comes ahead of a key away fixtures list entry against fifth-placed West Brom on 10 October, a match that could see Wright back in contention as City look to close a six-point gap to the top.
