Birmingham City's 2-1 victory at Derby County was overshadowed by a serious injury to home striker Henrik Meister. The Championship match at Pride Park was halted for seven minutes in the second half after the 22-year-old Dane collapsed with no players near him.
Medical staff rushed onto the pitch to treat Meister, who was making his first home start for Derby after a loan move from Pisa. After a lengthy period of treatment, he was carried off on a stretcher to applause from all sides of the ground and taken straight down the tunnel. Play resumed in the 54th minute with Oscar Fraulo replacing the stricken forward.
How the match unfolded
Bobby Clark had put Derby ahead five minutes before half-time, finishing an assist from Sammie Szmodics. Birmingham's response was swift, with Carlos Vicente levelling just two minutes later from a Liam Millar cross. The score was 1-1 at the time of the stoppage.
Chris Davies made a key change on the hour mark, bringing on Seung-Ho Paik for Jhon Solis. The substitution paid off three minutes later when Paik converted another Millar cross to complete the turnaround. The result lifts Birmingham to 14th in the Championship table with seven points from six games.
Davies on a tough start
After the match, Birmingham manager Chris Davies addressed his team's challenging early schedule. "I don't think anyone in the Championship had a harder start than us for opposition," Davies said. "It's not an excuse it's a fact."
He pointed to the need for consistency as his side builds momentum. "We've got some decent results in this period - we've got to keep that same competitiveness and come out of it with a few more results and then we can really push on."
The win at Derby follows a 2-1 loss at Norwich and forms part of a recent run of two wins, two draws and one loss. Birmingham have scored eight and conceded eight this season.
