Marvin Ducksch is reportedly keen on a January departure from Birmingham City to return to the Bundesliga. The 32-year-old forward’s potential exit comes as Chris Davies’s side sit seventh in the Championship, firmly in the play-off hunt with 20 points from 12 games, having recorded five wins and five draws from those matches.

Ducksch’s move to Valencia collapsed earlier this year, and he is now understood to be targeting a move back to Germany. A source close to the player stated, "he is keen on a departure now and wants to go back to the Bundesliga." With two years remaining on his contract at St Andrew’s, running until June 2028, the club are prepared to sanction his departure if he formally requests it. The club's stance is that they will not stand in his way should he push for the move, but they will demand an appropriate fee for a player of his experience.

Squad context and form

The veteran attacker has made 43 appearances for Birmingham since joining, scoring 11 goals and providing two assists. This season, however, he has struggled for impact, registering no goals or assists, a stark contrast to the team's overall tally of 20 goals scored this campaign. Ducksch, who can operate as a striker or attacking midfielder, previously spent four years at Werder Bremen and has also played for Borussia Dortmund, FC St. Pauli, Fortuna Dusseldorf, and Hannover 96.

His potential departure would free up significant squad space and resources as Davies looks to strengthen an attack that already includes Jay Stansfield, August Priske and Luis Vazquez. The need for fully committed players is acute with the club five points behind leaders Middlesbrough and claiming the joint-best defensive record in the division, having conceded only 12 goals. The club's recruitment team is already drawing up a shortlist of potential replacements, with a focus on younger, dynamic forwards suited to Davies's high-pressing system.

Promotion push continues

Birmingham’s focus remains on securing a Premier League return. They travel to face Lincoln City on Saturday, 31 October, looking to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat at Cardiff City last time out. That loss, where Yousef Salech scored the only goal, snapped a three-game winning streak that included a 3-0 victory over QPR and a 4-0 win against Preston. Manager Chris Davies has emphasised the importance of squad unity and focus during the January window, stating that any incoming or outgoing business must not disrupt the positive momentum built over the first quarter of the campaign.
