Benny Watton, 38, died suddenly on August 6. The 38-year-old scaffolder, who left Northfield for Torquay in 2022, was a beloved figure in both Birmingham and Devon. More than £8,500 has been raised to cover his funeral, scheduled for September 11. A tribute is expected at Birmingham City’s home EFL Cup match against Brentford on Tuesday, August 25, as the club’s fans honour his memory.
Funeral and Fundraiser
Nadia Burke, 55, Benny’s mother, told BirminghamLive that she had received around 1,000 messages of support. She said, “He was a larger-than-life character who could light up a room. He was extremely loved and had an infectious smile and laugh.” The fundraiser has already surpassed £8,500, with many people contributing to ensure Benny’s funeral is a celebration of his life.
Community Tributes
Benny was known in every part of Torquay, where he helped people through their pain. A special event on August 28 will see Zo Co Company rename its menu after Benny at The Hayes café and football pitch centre in Kings Norton. Nadia said she will aim to do something in memory of Benny, saying, “This year’s been an abundance of pain; I can’t comprehend it.” The funeral on September 11 will be “the best send-off ever” and a celebration of his life.
