Birmingham City secured a 1-0 win over Swansea City in the Carabao Cup, with August Priske scoring the decisive goal. The match was played at the Swansea.com Stadium, and the visitors showed fantastic determination and grit to advance to the second round. The game started out scrappy, but it was Swansea who had most of the possession in the opening stages. Although it took until the 9th minute for the first chance of the game, which fell to the hosts after Cameron Burgess met Josh Tymon's corner with a free header, the centre back couldn't direct his effort on target. A few minutes later, James Beadle kept the hosts at bay after he saved a right-footed effort from Adam Idah when he was played in by Joseph Opoku. Twenty minutes before the break, Birmingham threatened the Swansea goal more by luck than judgment as Seung Ho Paik's cross-come-shot forced Lawrence Vigouroux to come and fist the ball away from danger. Moments later, Swansea hit the visitors on the break when Opoku broke free down the right-hand side and he found Elijah Just with a short, precise pass, but Just's shot from the centre of the box went wide of the right-hand post. New Swansea signings Melker Widell and Moussa Kounfolo Yeo linked up well, with the latter lifting a ball to the back stick, but Idah couldn't direct his header and it clipped off Blues captain Christoph Klarer's head for a corner. Five minutes later, Just made an explosive run to the end of the box, but unfortunately for the hosts the ball went wide as he tried to place his effort into the bottom left-hand corner. Minutes later, a long throw ended up on Jay Stansfield's head, but his header was tipped over the bar by Vigouroux. Just before the break, Birmingham got the all-important breakthrough against the run of play after a set piece to the back post wasn't dealt with by the hosts and Carlos Vicente was there to play the ball back for Priske to bag his first goal of the campaign from close range. In the 70th minute, Swansea were awarded a corner, which fell to Jay Fulton, but Beadle pulled off an unbelievable save down to his left to keep Birmingham in the lead. Swansea were trying to get back into the tie to keep their Carabao Cup hopes alive and in the 85th minute they almost did that, but Zan Vipotnik's header from a Tymon corner wasn't troubling Beadle, as his effort went wide of the post. Despite not playing at their best and their only shot on target being Priske's winning strike, Birmingham showed fantastic determination, grit and teamwork to advance to the second round of the Carabao Cup.
