Birmingham City climbed to third in the Championship with a commanding 4-0 victory over Preston North End at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park. The win, which featured goals from Liam Millar, a double from August Priske and a late finish from Demarai Gray, lifts Chris Davies's side to 17 points from their opening 10 games.
Referee Sam Allison oversaw a match that turned decisively in the hosts' favour after Preston's Stan Mills was sent off for a second bookable offence in the 56th minute. Graham Alexander had made three changes to his starting eleven, but his side struggled to contain Birmingham's fluid attack even before playing with ten men.
Patrick Roberts provided the assist for Liam Millar's opening goal in the 34th minute, capping a bright start. August Priske then struck twice in first-half stoppage time, first from an Alex Cochrane cross and then from a Jay Stansfield pass, to put the game beyond doubt. Demarai Gray added a fourth in the 76th minute, assisted by Max Bird, to complete the rout. Preston's Dan Iversen made saves to deny Bird twice in the second half, but the visitors rarely threatened James Beadle's goal.
Millar and Cochrane shine
The performance of the left-sided partnership between Liam Millar and Alex Cochrane was particularly notable. Millar, who joined on loan at the very end of the summer window, now has two Championship goals and three assists this term. Only Blackburn’s Oladapo Afolayan and West Ham’s Jarrod Bowen have more goal contributions among wingers in the division.
Alex Cochrane, the 26-year-old summer signing from Hearts, was a standout, delivering what manager Chris Davies described as an "exceptional assist" for Priske's first goal. "It was an exceptional assist for the first of Priske’s two goals," Davies said of Cochrane's contribution. The defender, who developed at Brighton, has quickly become a key component in Davies's system, though this was only the second time he and Millar have completed 90 minutes together in the league.
Promotion push gathers pace
The result solidifies Birmingham's strong start upon their immediate return to the Championship, where they have now taken just over half of the points available. With 17 points from 10 matches, they sit six points behind leaders Swansea City and are firmly in the automatic promotion conversation.
August Priske's brace takes his season tally to four goals in nine appearances, making him the club's top scorer. The Danish striker's finishing, combined with the creativity from wide areas, gives Birmingham a potent attacking threat as they prepare for their next challenge. They host Queens Park Rangers at St. Andrew's on Saturday, aiming to extend a two-game winning run and maintain pressure on the teams above them.
