Scott Twine scored for Bristol City to give them a 0-1 win over Birmingham City at St Andrew’s on the first home game of the season. The goal came from a free-kick at half-time, with Twine nodding the ball into the bottom corner.

Twine’s early strike

The only goal of the match was a well-executed free-kick from halfway. Dickie’s delivery was angled across the box and Twine, who had been unused in the previous match against Millwall, made a smart run to finish with a header that slipped past the Blues’ goalkeeper. The goal was the first for Bristol City under new manager Michael Skubala, who has lost both of his opening matches.

Birmingham’s lineup and injury woes

Birmingham City lined up in a 4-2-3-1 with Beadle on the bench. The squad was unchanged for the third consecutive match, with Marvin Ducksch replacing Max Bird, who was ruled out after a training-ground injury. Bird had made his debut against Sheffield United the week before, but the injury forced him to miss the home debut against his former club.

Bristol’s defensive setup

Bristol City played a 4-2-3-1, with Tickle at the back and a midfield of Tanner, Dickie, Eissat and Cardines. The defence was solid, with Wallace, Twine, Hirakawa and Tolaj covering the wide areas. The Robins also used a defensive strategy, with a focus on set-pieces and counter-attacks, a style Skubala is known for from his time at Lincoln City.

The match saw several chances for Birmingham. Jhon Solis had a shot from 20 yards that hit the bar, while Paik Seung-ho’s first attempt was wide. A corner was taken by Knight, but Tolaj’s header was blocked by Osayi-Samuel. On the other side, Bristol’s only shot that hit the target was Twine’s free-kick.

The result leaves Birmingham City with a point from their first home game, while Bristol City move to 0-2 in their opening two matches. The Blues will look to improve their attacking output in the next fixture, while Bristol City will try to build on the confidence of a win under Skubala.
